Sky Mavis Announces Staff Cuts and Plans for Web3 Gaming Future

Sky Mavis, creator of Axie Infinity, cuts 21% of its staff to refocus efforts and confirms a new game for 2025.

Strategic Layoffs Amid Shifts in Focus

Sky Mavis, the developer of Axie Infinity and the Ronin gaming network, has laid off 21% of its employees in what it describes as a strategic realignment. The firm confirmed the layoffs in a Nov. 23 announcement, with co-founder Nguyen Thanh Trung emphasizing that the decision was not due to financial strain.

“This move positions Sky Mavis for hypergrowth in 2025 and beyond,” Trung explained. The restructuring will prioritize advancements in the Ronin wallet, Mavis marketplace, Axie Infinity, a new Axie-related game, Web3 game publishing, and the broader expansion of the Ronin Network.

Axie Infinity: A Gaming Powerhouse Adapts

Axie Infinity remains a cornerstone of Sky Mavis’ ecosystem. The popular play-to-earn game combines NFT collectibles with blockchain-based gameplay, leveraging the Ronin Network for efficiency. While its popularity surged in early 2021, the company has been working to sustain momentum in a competitive Web3 gaming landscape.

Sky Mavis revealed that the next Axie Infinity game is slated for release in Q1 2025. A spokesperson noted that the upcoming title will “leverage the lessons and institutional knowledge” gained from the original game’s success and challenges.

Ronin Network’s Role and Challenges

The Ronin Network, an Ethereum-based sidechain designed for gaming, has been a pivotal tool for Sky Mavis. Trung claims it is now the third-most-used crypto network. However, it has faced security setbacks, including a $12 million hack in August, though most of the stolen funds were returned by a white hat hacker.

Despite these challenges, the company remains optimistic about Ronin’s potential as a hub for Web3 gaming.

Regulatory Shifts Shape Strategy

The announcement comes amidst shifting regulatory climates, spurred in part by Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential election win. Trung highlighted the potential for “crypto-friendly policies” to fuel innovation and adoption in Web3.

Sky Mavis believes these changes could significantly expand opportunities in DeFi and blockchain gaming. “The token design space will now massively open up,” a company representative said. “This shift is incredibly bullish for sectors like gaming, which hold the most long-term value in the industry.”

Looking Ahead

While layoffs are always challenging, Sky Mavis views the restructuring as essential for long-term growth. By refocusing on key priorities and aligning with emerging market conditions, the firm aims to cement its position as a leader in blockchain gaming.
